A standing-room only crowd gathered at the Jarvis Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to bid on paintings, sculpture, silver and furnishings from an exceptional estate sale hammered down by Paul McInnis.

 

A group of unsigned sketches by the American artist, Edmund Tarbell (1862-1938) which descended in the artist’s New Castle, New Hampshire family were offered and included:    “Mrs. Tarbell At Evening”, oil on canvas, $225,000 (this piece was exhibited at the Museum Of Fine Arts in Boston); “Mrs. Tarbell With Her Horse”, oil on canvas, $83,000; and “Floral Still Life”, oil on canvas, $20,000.   There were 10 sketches in all realizing over $385,000. Other notable items included a bronze of “Napoleon On Horseback”, by Barye, $10,500, as well as a varied selection of antiques and furnishings.   (Prices do not reflect Buyer’s Premium.)  Fierce competition from the floor and several phone bidders including one from England provided tremendous drama at the auction.
